There are hundreds of movements and pieces of equipment in CrossFit, but if you learn the nine foundational movements below and even just the basics of Olympic lifting, you’ll be off to a great start! Here are the most common movements that are helpful for new CrossFitters to see.

“SPEAKING CROSSFIT” GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Here are a few of the most commonly-used acronyms or phrases in CrossFit:

MetCon: Metabolic Conditioning (also known as the WOD, or Workout of the Day)

AMRAP: As Many Rounds + Reps As Possible

AMREP: As Many Repetitions As Possible

EMOM: Every Minute on the Minute

FT: For Time

RDS: Rounds

Box: A CrossFit gym (also called an “affiliate”)

PR: Personal Record

Score: The result of your workout.

RX: To do the workout “as prescribed”

Scaled: To modify the workout as needed

The Girls: Several benchmark workouts named after females and used to test an athlete’s progress over time. Ex: Cindy, Fran, Nancy

Hero WODs: Benchmark workouts created to honor fallen police officers, soldiers and firefighters. Ex: Murph

The Games: An abbreviation for the CrossFit Games, an annual competition to find the fittest male and female CrossFitter on earth.

 

And here are some other acronyms to describe CrossFit movements:

Kipping: A powerful and athletic reversal of hip direction to use body mechanics in completing a movement.

MU: Muscle-Up (Note: RMU is Ring Muscle-Up and BMU is Bar Muscle-Up)

OHS: Overhead Squat

PC: Power Clean

Pood (PD): Init of weight measurement for the kettlebell. One pood equals 35 pounds.

PP: Push Press

PSN: Power Snatch

PU: Pull-Up or Push-Up

S2OH: Shoulder to Overhead

SDLHP: Sumo Deadlift High Pull

SN: Snatch

SUs: Single Unders (done with a jump rope)

TGU: Turkish Get-Up, a total-body exercise

T2B: Toes-to-Bar, a core exercise

TNG: Touch-and-Go (referring to Olympic lifts)

UNB: Unbroken; To do a movement without stopping.

WB: Wall Ball

AMSU: Ab Mat Sit-Up

BP: Bench Press

BS: Back Squat

BW: Body Weight

C&J: Clean & Jerk

CLN: Clean

DB: Dumbbell

DL: Deadlift

DUs: Double Unders (done with a jump rope)

Firebreather: an extremely fit athlete

FS: Front Squat

G2OH: Ground to Overhead

G20S: Ground to Over Shoulder

GHDSU: Glute Ham Developer Sit-Up

HRPU: Hand-Release Push-Up

HSPU: Hand-Stand Push-Up

HSW: Hand-Stend Walks

KB: KettleBell

KBS: Kettlebell Swings
